What’s the difference between website design and web development?

It’s important to differentiate web design from website development; the front-end from the back-end. As you may have guessed, the front-end (i.e. website design) is what you see on your monitor when surfing the net, while the back-end (i.e. website development) is what you don’t see, but enables a website to function correctly.

In the context of this website, the menu you used to get to this page, these words you’re reading now and the images dotted around the screen are the front-end and relevant to web design. The method by which we make quick additions (i.e. the Content Management System) and the database that stores the information on this website are the back-end and therefore relevant to website development.

Think of it like a car; the bodywork and how it looks is design, the engine and how it works is development.

Why is website design an important aspect to consider?

Without wanting to state the obvious, the better looking a website, the more likely that an end-user will want to visit again, utilise a company’s services or buy a company’s products. It could be the smoothest running website ever built, but if it looks like a child created it, then no one will trust it enough to use it.

Even if the website doesn’t do anything beyond supply information about a company, it still acts as a shop-front and as an extension of a brand’s reputation. The days of needing a website are over, now it’s more a case of needing a stylish and graphically advanced website.

Online Development and website design

We strongly believe that our previous websites speak for themselves and no website we have designed is anything less than visually impressive. Our in-house graphic and web design skills mean that we don’t need to outsource any work and we can be the consistent agency in the design of a website from conception to completion.
